Following a theft of a postal-order, a fourteen-yer old cadet is expelled from Naval College. To save the honour of the boy and his family, the pre-eminent barrister of the day is engaged to take on the might of the Admiralty.
A wee bird told me the play that this film was adapted from was a set text in schools in England quite a few years ago. The Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society did a stage-version of the play, so many will be familiar with the story.
Jeremy Northam won Best British Performance in 1999 at Edinburgh International Festival which is commonly abbreviated to EIFF. A true gem of a film showing an interesting side to life at the time.
Neil North whom plays First Lord of the Admiralty in this film version of the play, played Ronnie Winslow in the 1948 film version of the play. Word is when he was on set in 1999 he casually told the crew and they were stunned into silence as the serendipity is very poignant.
Performers: Rebecca Pidgeon / Jeremy Northam / Nigel Hawthorne / Matthew Pidgeon / Gemma Jones / Lana Bilzerian / Sarah Flind
